What Surprised You Most About Your First Renovation?
Curious to hear from people who have been through a renovation already, what was the biggest surprise for you, good or bad?
For us it was honestly how much the little decisions added up. We thought the big stuff like flooring and cabinets would be where most of the budget went, but it was actually all the small things, hardware, trim, paint touch ups, that quietly ate into the budget without us realizing it until we looked at the final numbers.
The other surprise was how disruptive the process actually is to daily life. Even a renovation that only affected one room somehow managed to take over the whole house for a few weeks. Dust everywhere, tools in every hallway, and a constant rotation of different trades coming in and out made even simple tasks like cooking dinner feel like a challenge.
On the positive side, the thing that surprised me most was how much better the space felt once everything was done. Photos online never really capture how different a room feels in person once the layout and finishes actually come together.
Would love to hear other people's experiences, whether it is something that went smoother than expected or something that completely caught you off guard.

This is so relatable. The small stuff really does add up fast, hardware, trim, paint touch ups, things you never think to budget for separately. And you are so right about how disruptive it is even for smaller renovations, the whole house ends up feeling chaotic for weeks.
One thing that helped us avoid budget surprises was getting a detailed cost breakdown before starting, covering even the small line items most people overlook. For anyone planning their first renovation, visit website: https://kellyestimating.com.au/
